My story

Dear Family, Friends, and Community,

I need a kidney. Twenty-four years ago, I had my right kidney removed because of a tumor. Since laparoscopic surgery wasn’t as common then, both the tumor and kidney were removed. In these last 24 years, I’ve been living with only one kidney. In 2017 I had a tumor removed from left kidney which at this point as you can imagine is not working well enough to keep me aliveby itself. Now, I am faced with the terrifying reality of dialysis treatments and a kidney transplant.

While dialysis will help my kidney do what it’s supposed to do, I will be spending three times a week for four hours at a time receiving treatment. Receiving a kidney transplant will allow me more freedom and the chance at a longer, healthier life. That’s four hours and three times a week I will be getting back to doing what I love most: spending as much time as I can with my beautiful wife Beth, our two gorgeous daughters, Mollie and Katie, and our Son-in-Law, Collin. Our family loves the outdoors, boating, fishing, camping and during football season spendingjust about every Sunday together with our family and friends watching the Dallas Cowboys. I love to BBQ, and I hope to continue to participate in BBQ competitions with my buddies (and winning), and spending time with my puppy dog, Lilly.

Here’s the thing about kidney transplants - it’s not easy. Thousands of people wait for years on the list for a deceased donor kidney. That’s why I’m looking for a living donor. It’s hard to ask someone who I know to consider donating a kidney, but it drastically improves my chances of getting one. A living kidney donation typically lasts longer, and functions better than a kidney from a deceased donor.

If you’re not sure what it’s like to be a living donor, you’re not alone. You might be nervous about the possibility of living with just one kidney. But here are some things you need to know about kidney donation:

● You only need one kidney to live a good, long life.
● Most donor surgeries are done laparoscopically, meaning it’s done with small incisions (I wish I had that 24 years ago).
● Recovery for a donor is usually about two weeks.
● The cost of your evaluation and surgery will be covered.
● You will have a separate team of healthcare professionals to evaluate you as a living donor. Their job is to help you understand the risks and benefits and look out for your best interests.

You can learn more about living donation on renewal.org or by contacting tjacobs@renewal.org

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I’ve been in Dallas my whole life, and I can’t imagine having a better community to support me than right here. If donating a kidney is something you would like to consider, I’d be happy to tell you more about my story and the process of determining if you are a match for me.
